Certain products containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) – a flavor enhancer used in many food products – have been recalled nationwide due to concerns about salmonella contamination. To date, no associated illnesses have been reported.

The HVP was manufactured by Basic Food Flavors Inc. of Las Vegas, which issued a voluntary recall of all powder and paste HVP made since Sept. 17, 2009.
“This recall situation is somewhat unique, because of the small levels of HVP in processed foods and because many of these foods are made with processes that kill salmonella,” according to an FDA fact sheet. “In addition, many foods that contain HVP are cooked by consumers in ways that would kill salmonella.”
