Mike Vail was named president and chief executive officer of Sweetbay Supermarket, a Tampa-based chain consisting of more than 100 retail stores and more than one billion dollars in annual sales, in June 2008.
In 2001, Vail moved to Tampa and became vice president of Merchandising for Kash n' Karry providing leadership for the evolution to Hannaford supply chain systems. In 2004, Mike assumed responsibilities of senior vice president of Retail Operations. In this role, he successfully led the operational transition from Kash n' Karry to Sweetbay through the execution of the concept and early success. Mike’s role in the creation of Sweetbay has demonstrated his ability to support an organization that is unique to Florida, while leveraging the best of all operating companies of Delhaize Group.
Mike’s career has spanned more than 20 years at Sweetbay and Hannaford and, during that time, he has gained deep and broad experience in all areas of the supermarket business. During his years at Hannaford, Mike held several positions such as retail management trainee, store manager, district manager, category manager and, eventually, director of Deli Merchandising.
Currently, Vail serves on the Board of Directors of America’s Second Harvest, the local food bank that serves 10 counties in west central Florida, as well as many other organizations that serve Sweetbay communities.
Paul Sabattus
Vice President of Marketing
Sweetbay Supermarket
Paul Sabattus joined Sweetbay as vice president of
Marketing in July 2007 from H-E-B Food and Drug, one of the nation's leading
and most dynamic food and drug chains.
At H-E-B, Paul served as director of Sales and
Marketing for the Houston Division where he was responsible for the
merchandising, marketing,advertising strategy and
merchandising contribution for the business. He
set the course for overall brand positioning, market segmentation and
promotional plans.
Paul is extremely passionate about profitable
sales growth. In his previous role, he set strategic pricing initiatives
focused on achieving margin goals and price image leadership.
Paul has significant expertise regarding all functions
of retail including operations, new store openings,competitor blunting,
market research and associate development.
At Sweetbay, Paul will continue the work on building
a dynamic brand, creating a merchant culture that focuses on profitable
sales growth and serving as the voice of the consumer in all decision
making.
Paul believes in creating a world-class shopping
experience for Sweetbay customers. He is known as a collaborative

Lori Malcolm
Vice President of Human Resources & Organizational Development
Sweetbay Supermarket
Lori Malcolm joined Sweetbay in April 2008 as vice
president of Human Resources & Organizational Development. Malcolm's primary
responsibilities include promoting Sweetbay's passion for food and passion for
people among associates, senior managers, and operating officers and directors.
She will also be responsible for enhancing Sweetbay's corporate culture and
values, helping to create a vibrant place to work.
With more than 20 years of experience in the areas of
finance, marketing, information technology and human resources management,
Malcolm brings expertise in developing effective organizations and building
high performing teams. Previously she held the title of senior director of
human resources transformation at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. She was one of five
leaders selected across all human resources areas to design the next
generation of HR within the organization.
Prior to working for Walmart Stores, Inc., Malcolm held
various positions in marketing and recruitment for Disney Worldwide Services,
Inc., Lake Buena Vista Fla., Robert Half International, Orlando, Fla., and
IBM Corporation, Annapolis, Md. She has participated in several professional
training seminars including the Business Leadership Series and the Corporate
Leadership Council, and holds an HR Professional Certification. Malcolm
received a bachelor's degree in operations research and industrial
engineering from Cornell University.
Karen Fernald
Senior Vice President, Retail Operations
Sweetbay Supermarket
Karen Fernald serves as senior vice president of Retail Operations for Sweetbay.
A proven leader and 26-year Hannaford associate, Karen will serve as a member of the Sweetbay executive team, guiding future development of the 108-store chain and acting as the lead retail officer, responsible to drive the value of the Sweetbay shopping experience.
Karen started at Hannaford in 1984 while in college and graduated from the Hannaford District Management Trainee program. She went on to hold a wide range of retail, management planning, marketing and merchandising positions, including non-perishable category manager, district manager, director of retail operations, and vice president of fresh merchandising. She was promoted to vice president of retail operations for the Eastern Division in 2005.
Active as a volunteer in Maine, Karen served on the board of Common Good Ventures, which helps Maine nonprofits excel in the community through smart management practices, and was a member of the Scarborough Primary Parent-Teacher Organization. Until recently, she also served on the board of the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education. A 1987 graduate of the University of Southern Maine, she has a bachelor's degree in business management.
