Working out doesn't always need to happen at the gym, there are other ways to exercise. Spicing up your routine by changing your exercise habits helps to avoid boredom and possible burnout. There are plenty of great activities to get you out of the office or home. Visit the beach where you can walk, run or swim. Toss a Frisbee with your kids. Visit the mountains for a trail run or hike and include the whole family. Re-experience an activity that you haven't tried in years, or take on a new activity such as kayaking, rock climbing, or bodysurfing. You can also join a team sport like volleyball or softball. No matter what activity you choose, be sure to follow these basic safety tips.
Stretch before and after your exercise/activity. Warm up first! Preferably by walking. A 5-10 minute warm-up will help to prevent injuries during and after your exercise. Remember, warm muscles stretch more easily. Follow your cool down with a stretch of your major muscle groups
Stay hydrated (before, during and after exercise). Avoid caffeine and alcohol before exercise. Drink 4-8 ounces of fluid every 10-15 minutes during exercise
Get fueled before you participate in your activity, making sure you have enough calories to burn throughout the duration of your activity. A banana or a small bagel makes a great snack
Choose cooler times of the day to exercise such as first thing in the morning or early evening
Wear light, loose-fitting clothing that allows evaporation. Dress in cotton mesh and microfibers that wick moisture from your body; this will help keep you cool and comfortable. A running hat with mesh panels will give you extra ventilation. Wear appropriate footwear for your activity. Wear reflective clothing (such as a vest, or an ankle strip).
When kayaking, biking, rollerblading etc. be sure to wear a helmet
Use waterproof sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 and wear sunglasses. Always swim with a buddy or when a lifeguard is on duty
Have information on you that tells of any medical conditions/allergies that you may have
Carry a cell phone and first aid kit whenever possible
